Castorocauda

Castorocauda is an extinct genus of docodont mammaliaforms from the Middle to Late Jurassic, known from a single species, C. lutrasimilis. Discovered in the Daohugou Beds of Inner Mongolia, China, it is the largest known Jurassic mammaliaform and the earliest known with aquatic adaptations and a fur pelt. Its discovery helped disprove the hypothesis that mammaliaforms remained evolutionarily stagnant until the end of the Mesozoic.

Lore & Background

Castorocauda lived in a wet, seasonal, cool temperate environment with an average temperature possibly below 15 °C. It shared its habitat with salamanders, pterosaurs, birdlike dinosaurs, and other mammaliaforms. Its teeth curved backward to grip slippery fish, similar to seals and Eocene whales, and its forelimbs resembled those of the modern platypus, suggesting it used its arms for both digging and rowing. The tail vertebrae were flattened like those of beavers and otters, indicating use for paddling.

Its fur, preserved in the holotype, is the earliest known pelt and demonstrates that fur was an ancestral trait of mammals.
