In 1876, Edward Drinker Cope named the genus from isolated vertebrae recovered along the Judith River in Fergus County, Montana, within Late Cretaceous deposits of the Judith River Formation. Cope designated C. annectens as the type species, basing it on nine vertebral centra, two of which are now lost. However, those vertebrae proved undiagnostic at the species level, earning C. annectens the unfortunate label of nomen vanum or nomen dubium—a conclusion later reinforced by William Parks in 1933. Brown also revealed that one of Cope's species, C. vaccinsulensis, was actually indeterminate plesiosaur material.
